 What is the E-7-2 Visa?

The E-7-2 visa is a “Special Activity” visa that allows foreign nationals with certain skills or expertise to work
in designated job sectors in Korea.
Chefs fall under the category of “foreign workers in the culinary field.”

📌 1. Basic Eligibility (for the applicant)

Category Requirements

Age Typically 18 years or older
Education High school diploma or higher (preferably)
Experience At least 1 year of experience in culinary work OR possession of relevant certification
Certification Culinary certificates preferred (Korean, Chinese, Western, Japanese cuisine, etc.)
Korean Language TOPIK score is an advantage (not mandatory)

📌 2. Employer Requirements (Korean side)

  • Must have an active business license
  • Must clearly demonstrate the need to hire a foreign chef
  • Must prove no suitable Korean candidate is available
  • Must meet foreign employment ratio regulations

📌 3. Step-by-Step Procedure

① Foreign chef signs an employment contract with a Korean restaurant or company

  • Contract should specify salary, working conditions, duration, etc.

② The employer applies for an Employment Recommendation Letter

  • Submit to the Immigration Office or local authority

③ Once recommended, apply for pre-screening approval at the Immigration Office

  • This is a preliminary step before visa application

④ After pre-approval, the foreign chef applies for an E-7-2 visa at the Korean embassy in their home country

  • Submit passport, approval documents, contract, proof of experience, etc.

⑤ Enter Korea → Register as a foreign resident at the Immigration Office

  • Passport and photo
  • Employment contract
  • Academic certificate or career certificate
  • Culinary certificate (if available)
  • Korean language certificate (optional)
  • Visa application form

💡 Additional Notes

  • Foreign Worker Quota: Employers cannot exceed a certain number of foreign hires
  • Employment Type: Full-time or contract of at least 1 year is recommended
  • Visa Duration: Usually 1–2 years, renewable
  • High-demand Cuisines: Chinese, Indian/Nepalese, Southeast Asian, Halal cuisine, etc.
